Its command-line interface can be a little intimidating, but in most cases all you need to do is follow the prompts. This little Linux-based beauty, written by Petter Nordahl-Hagen, is a free alternative to Active Boot Disk for resetting Windows passwords. Its imaging abilities aren’t up to those in R-Drive Image, but they’re still more versatile than those in Windows. Active Boot Disk is a great all-around toolkit. PE’s major advantages are that it presents the familiar Windows GUI, and it lets you load oddball drivers at boot time-most handy with unusual older hardware, or when a new technology such as USB 3.0 shows up before Windows or Linux starts including drivers for it. Just keep in mind that changing a password will kill your ability to recover data from Windows-encrypted accounts.Īctive Boot Disk uses the Windows Pre-Install Environment (PE). I can’t even tell you the number of times that ability can save the day, whether by permitting you to log on to a computer for which you’ve forgotten the password, or by allowing access to data stored on a former employee’s PC. Active (branded as also lets you change Windows passwords. It’s especially reliable.Īt $80, this boot drive may seem pricey, but it provides top-notch file and partition recovery in addition to the ability to create and restore images. R-Drive Image’s minimalist modern interface is easier for the less geeky to navigate.īecause it additionally offers a full-blown Windows version that mounts images as virtual hard drives, R-Drive has been my go-to boot-drive and backup tool for the past few years. The basic interface (as low as 64MB) is an adorable back-to-the-’80s, character-based affair, but the program also has a modern interface with a more Windows-friendly look. As of version 5.1, it supports the vast majority of SATA, USB, and network hardware. The R-Drive Image image-recovery utility works with a minimal amount of memory and supports every modern file system: FAT, NTFS, Linux, Mac, and BSD types, and even the latest ReFS in Microsoft’s Server 2012. Maybe it will challenge you to a nice game of chess. R-Drive Image’s basic interface will make you want to gag yourself with a spoon, but it uses very little memory. If the Windows recovery disk won’t work for you (and it sometimes won’t), then you need to turn to something more capable, versatile, and reliable, such as one of the boot drives described below. vhd (Virtual Hard Drive) images by attaching them through Computer/Drive Management, but only after you’ve reinstalled Windows. Unfortunately, Windows’ image-restore feature isn’t reliable at restoring to different hardware, such as a functioning hard drive brought in to replace a failing one. This is usually your second-best option, however, as you lose any data written to the hard drive since the image was created.ĭiskpart is Microsoft’s effective, but command-line-only, partition editor. If you can’t recover using the aforementioned tools, the disk also allows you to restore the entire system partition (and other partitions, if you included them in the backup) from a Windows backup image file you’ve created. (A noisy hard drive may be failing, in which case you’re better off backing it up before doing anything else, including running diagnostics.) Don’t give up on a quiet hard drive with errors until you’ve tried chkdsk it may fix the issues you’re having. The command prompt gives you access to useful tools such as Microsoft’s disk-partitioning utility and, of course, the venerable chkdsk hard-drive scanning and repair utility, which can fix file-system errors or map bad drive sectors. A Windows 7 or 8 recovery disk is often the best place to start when your system fails.

The MLR is composed of two main nuclei: the cuneiform nucleus (CnF) and the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN). A series of studies have identified such populations, their projections, interactions and downstream targets in the mesencephalic locomotor region (MLR) and the pontomedullary reticular formation (RF) that are critically involved in the control of locomotor speed and gait ( Capelli et al., 2017 Caggiano et al., 2018 Josset et al., 2018). The advent of viral and genetic tools recently enabled experimental studies to further dissect the brainstem locomotor command circuitry into functionally distinct neuronal populations. Although the generation of locomotor oscillations and mutual interactions between oscillators controlling each limb are implemented within the spinal cord ( Grillner, 2006 Kiehn, 2006 Goulding, 2009 Grillner and Jessell, 2009 Kiehn, 2016 Boije and Kullander, 2018), both locomotor speed and interlimb coordination (gait) are controlled by several brainstem structures that transform signals from higher brain centers into meaningful commands to initiate, stop or modulate locomotor frequency and gait ( Lemon, 2008 Ryczko and Dubuc, 2013 Roseberry et al., 2016 Kim et al., 2017 Takakusaki, 2017 Brownstone and Chopek, 2018 Ferreira-Pinto et al., 2018 Gatto and Goulding, 2018). Alternatively, during chasing/hunting or escaping threats that require faster movements, animals switch to left-right synchronous gaits, such as gallop and bound ( Clarke and Still, 1999 Herbin et al., 2004 Herbin et al., 2007 Bellardita and Kiehn, 2015 Lemieux et al., 2016). During relatively slow locomotion, for example when animals explore the environment, they typically exhibit left-right asynchronous/alternating gaits, such as walk and trot. In quadrupeds, changes in locomotor speed are accompanied by changes in interlimb coordination ( Grillner, 1975 Miller et al., 1975 Hildebrand, 1989 Maes and Abourachid, 2013). To survive in changing and unpredictable environments animals need to continuously adapt their behavior including locomotor speed. We suggest that brainstem control of locomotion is mediated by two pathways, one controlling locomotor speed via connections to rhythm generating circuits in the spinal cord and the other providing gait control by targeting commissural and long propriospinal interneurons. Here, by extending our previous model, we propose a connectome of the brainstem-spinal circuitry and suggest a mechanistic explanation of the operation of brainstem structures and their roles in controlling speed and gait. Previously we suggested that commissural and long propriospinal interneurons are the main targets for brainstem inputs adjusting gait (Danner et al., 2017). However, the interactions of these brainstem centers with each other and with the spinal locomotor circuits are poorly understood. A series of recent studies identified key structures in the mesencephalic locomotor region and the caudal brainstem of mice involved in the initiation and control of slow (exploratory) and fast (escape-type) locomotion and gait. The soot can then be brushed off with a dry bristle brush or cloth. To clean the logs, be sure the fire is out, the gas supply is turned off and the logs are cool to the touch. The soot should be cleaned off the surface of the logs periodically to prevent excessive buildup. This is more likely to occur when using LP gas. Not protecting the fire pit could result in a void of the warranty.Ĭarbon (soot) may build up on the surfaces of the logs with heavy use. While the fire pit is not in use, it should be covered to protect it from weather and other adverse elements. Periodically check the hose connecting the LP gas cylinder to ensure it is not damaged in any way. When the fire pit is put back in service, check the burner flame patterns it is imperative that the burner flame characteristics are steady, not lifting or floating. If you choose to file for benefits based on a secondary service connection, you’ll need to gather similar evidence as a standard service connection claim. Veterans who were physically injured during military service and later developed insomnia can also file for a secondary service connection.įor example, if you developed chronic back pain in the service and can no longer sleep through the night as a result, then insomnia would be the secondary condition. If you can show that the condition of insomnia and your diagnosed PTSD are directly related, then you can claim PTSD as the primary condition and insomnia as the secondary. Many veterans will benefit from seeking a VA disability rating for secondary insomnia.įor example, if you were officially diagnosed with PTSD while you were in the service, you may have developed insomnia due to the disorder. These secondary connections can be applied to both mental and physical conditions. Secondary Service Connection for InsomniaĪ secondary service connection is a byproduct of a different condition than was already determined to be service-connected. If a medical exam determines that a veteran has insomnia that is caused by another service-connected disability, then he or she may be able to obtain a service connection for insomnia through a secondary service connection. Insomnia seems to develop years later, usually in response to some other service-connected disability for example, chronic pain from a back condition or some other orthopedic condition, or, due to a psychiatric condition, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In my experience, most veterans who suffer from insomnia did not have this condition during their military days. If you get an unfavorable exam result in which the doctor disagrees with your assessment, you are allowed to challenge their conclusion either through a private doctor or with the help of a healthcare advisor. If your insomnia is caused by a physical condition, they may complete a standard physical examination during the exam as well.Īfter your appointment, the doctor will write a report and send it to the VA Regional Office (RO) for further review. The doctor may ask specific questions to understand more about the connection between your time in the service and your disability. They will conduct a routine examination, which may include psychological testing. These exams generally take place at a designated VA clinic or hospital.ĭuring the exam, the doctor is not there to treat your condition or provide any type of medication. While it’s usually more beneficial to the claim if the veteran already has a diagnosis on file, a C&P exam can gather medical evidence to support a claim or provide a second opinion. If a veteran does not have an official diagnosis of insomnia, then depending on the existing evidence, the VA may order a Compensation and Pension (C&P) examination. In other words, the VA does not consider whether you were on base or not when rating your disability.Įvents that result in insomnia can be difficult to pinpoint, especially because years have often passed before the veteran experiences symptoms.Ī veteran may have discussed their sleep issues with a doctor for an extended period of time before discovering the root cause of the problem. Please note that the in-service occurrence or incident does not necessarily need to have taken place while the veteran is officially on active duty. There are a number of events that can lead to insomnia, including the loss of a fellow service member during combat or a sudden attack during a standard convoy mission. In this example I will show you what happens to a ROM that has been hard patched with a ROM Hack/translation patch. Now for some actual Usage examples Fixing up a SNES Japanese ROM that had been hard patched with an English Fan Translation patch Once you have all necessary files set up, READ through Uf-Fox's README file to learn how to properly set up Uf-Fox so it can access Ucon64 & run things smoothly Some examples using Ucon64 & Uf-Fox Now download Ucon64 & Uf-Fox onto your tool folder & not in the output folder, unzip all the files & your done, oh, there might be another zipped archive along with Ucon64 named "ports" or "serialports", delete that you don't need it, it's used if you have a SNES copier/loader that has a serial cable port that can be hooked up onto your PC. Second, make an "output" folder where the fixed ROM will be sent once the application fixes it. You can download Ucon64 along with Uf-Fox here:įirst of BEFORE you download these applications, make sure you create a folder where these guys'll be going, don't pack them in with your ROMs! Some of the copier/loader specific commands on the Ucon64 application itself were left out A big minus for the very few of us who still have working SNES's & copier/loaders. However this comes at a small price, the creator of this Frontend only made his application so that commands essential to emulation users are the ones you can actually benefit using Now things are much, MUCH easier to get by! Now a few years back somebody "finally" said, "Screw this! using command-line is too much of a hassle!"Īnd so, that someone did something & what we have is Ucon64's GUI Fronted Uf-Fox! Actually to this day PCs generally don't know what these ROM Images are that's why you need an emulator so you can play them on your PCĪside from managing your ROMs, these applications were used to correct errors on your ROMs' checksum values, to make sure they will run correctly both on your emulator or actual console hardware by checking if your ROM was badly dumped, that is it was badly copied from a cartridge or if it is a good dumped copy.Īnd of course these things also allowed you to take saved data from an emulator & transfer it onto your copier/loader if you so need it which is a major plus if you ask me. In those days ROMs were backed up either by Floppy Disk (The SNES Super UFO copier/loader as an example)Īnd things like Ucon64 served as programs that help manage your ROM Collection on your Computers which obviously don't understand what those ROM files you are feeding it back then were. In those days, things like Ucon64, SNESTool & NSRT were practically used to manage ROMs, you see back in those days (& it still rings true to this day) there were things called Cartridge copier/loaders now commonly referred to as flashcarts. What use do we have for Ucon64?īack in the day, the late 90's to be more precise, ROM Hacking was at its infancy, few people only knew how to hack ROMs. You see, Ucon64 was & to this day still is a command-line based application, yep! you read that right Ucon64 uses command-line prompts to do its job & though using command-line prompts may in the very least be annoying to the un-initiated it still does its job right. Ucon64 is one of the oldest ROM management utilities floating around the net & in the emulation community, however its practically been abandoned by many due to its old school ways of doing things. This time around, I'll be taking about one of the oldest tools ever. It's not, Lunar IPS as I've done a small Tutorial on that already Today I'm going to share with you one of the applications I use whenever I apply ROM Hack or Fan Translation Patches onto several ROMs on my retro ROM collection thanks to RomUlation's vast library of retro titles It’s possible to open SVG files in GIMP, but you’ll only get access to wireframe outlines of your objects with very limited editing capabilities. The SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format is the most widely supported vector graphics format, and it’s used as the native file format for Inkscape. You can scale and adjust your vectors to any size you want, and then once you’re happy with the final result, you can export your image and convert it into a typical raster image that you can share and upload on social media or any other platform.Ī vector image at 100% zoom (left) and 1600% zoom (right), with no pixelation or loss of quality Most programs like web browsers and photo editors like GIMP can’t open or edit your vector graphic files, so you’ll have to convert them to a raster image. However, that mathematical nature also creates some compatibility issues. Each object is defined by a series of mathematical expressions that describe its position, size, color, and any other feature that may be associated with it.īecause these individual vector objects are just math, you can scale them to any size you want without losing image quality. Instead of a pixel grid, vector graphics are divided into separate objects. The most common image format in the world, JPEG, is a raster graphics file format, but there are also PNG, GIF, TIFF, and many other popular raster formats. Typically, raster graphic files can be displayed on any computer or mobile device, as long as it supports the specific file format. There are some new AI-based tools that use machine learning to upscale images fairly well, but that’s a topic for another article since they don’t work with GIMP. Whenever you enlarge a raster image, the computer can’t invent new image data (despite what TV crime dramas would have you believe), so you just wind up with a blurry version of your image where the original pixels are simply much larger than before.Ī raster image at 100% zoom (left), 400% zoom (middle), and 1600% zoom (right) This is a very simple way of making an image, but it has some drawbacks. Each pixel in the grid contains some information that tells the computer what color it is, how bright it is, and in some cases, its transparency level. Raster graphic files contain an orderly grid of pixels, very similar to how images are displayed on modern computer monitors, televisions, and smartphone screens. Inkscape creates and edits vector images. As I mentioned briefly in the introduction, there are two primary methods of constructing a computer image file: raster and vector. Let’s get a bit of technical terminology out of the way before we continue so that you’ll have a better sense of how these two programs differ. Trying to use the wrong tool for the job is always frustrating, but I’ll make things as clear and simple as I can, no matter if you’re an old hand or just getting your start in digital graphics. Since this isn’t a standard comparison article, I’m going to explain how the two programs differ and which one you should use for your project. After testing virtually every major graphics program available today, I’m here to help guide you through the world of image editing. I’ve been passionate about graphic arts for over 20 years and working in the digital art world for almost as long. If this is your first time here, let me say hi quickly: my name is Thomas Boldt, and I’m the writer and image editing expert on the TGT team. Ideally, I can help you avoid that and help you focus on the fun, creative parts of using GIMP and Inkscape! It’s possible to do some of these jobs in the “non-recommended” program, but you’ll find yourself taking ten times longer to do the same job – or just giving up out of sheer frustration. Combine GIMP and Inkspace in a Design WorkflowĪs I mentioned before, it all depends on what you’re doing, of course! Here’s a quick overview of which program is best for which task. This kernel will run from a USB SSD.īy the way, EndeavourOS 64 Bit on USB SSD runs Budgie very nicely. Is the Raspberry Pi Foundation kernel patched to boot on Arch Linux Arm. The script will create a new partition table, partition, and format the USB SSD. It works best if the USB SSD is connected at boot up. If you switch to the linux-rpi kernel the config-update script will then ask if you want to copy the OS to a USB SSD. To use a USB SSD, choose to switch the kernels. That script will ask if you want to switch kernels from the linux-aarch64 kernel (default in the 64 bit image) to the linux-rpi kernel which is the Raspberry Pi Foundation kernel with patch to run on arch linux. To employ a USB SSD one has to do step 1 to a micro SD.Īfter step 1 to a uSD, connect the micro SD card to the RPi 4, and run the step 2 script named “config-update”. If you are using the aarch64 64 Bit OS, you cannot install step 1 to a USB SSD because the Arch Linux Arm image uses the linux-aarch64 kernel. Should be able to boot directly from the SSD for Step 2. If you are using the armv7h 32 Bit OS, you can install step1 direct to a USB SSD, the script will ask if the target device is a micro SD or SSD. Your observations and advice are more than welcome! The eeprom update to enable the SSD boot occurred last summer before I ever installed the other distros. I have several other SSDs that boot just fine on the Pi4. The ability to have the same experience on my Raspberry Pi 4b is my new goal, but i seem to have run into a problem. As former Arch user, the install of eos was a pleasure.
